Folding Bikes

Folding bikes, as the name suggests, are bikes that fold up. They have gained popularity over the past decade or so and are now no longer an uncommon site on the roads and in the shops. They are especially popular with those who have limited storage space at home as well as those who take their bike on public transport. As these bikes can fold up to a much smaller size than a regular bicycle they are easy to stow away when not in use.

As mentioned, these products have become increasingly popular with people who use public transport and one such group is those who commute to work. These bikes are ideal for riding from your house to the train station and then from the destination train station to your place of work. As they can be folded very easily you can quickly pack the bike up and get on to the train with it ready for your journey. Of course you could take a regular bike on the train but this might not be a very popular decision with your fellow commuters, especially at rush hour when space on the train is at a premium. With a fold up bike you not only have an opportunity to increase your fitness on your daily commute but they also make you more popular with your fellow passengers!

Folding bikes have improved in design and sturdiness over the years due no doubt to customer demand. Not only are they great for commuting but they are great for leisure too – you can stow your bike in the boot of your car and then take off to your chosen destination and explore using your folding bike. Another advantage I am often reminded of is that you are less likely to have your folding bike stolen – you can keep it safe in a cupboard at the office or unobtrusively in your home…. that has to be a huge advantage in having one!

FOLDING BIKE ACCESSORIES
Just like regular bicycles there are a few essential accessories that can enhance the experience of owning a folding bike. One of the most important items that can be bought to accompany your bike is a folding bicycle bag. These are heavy duty bags that are just the right size to house a fold up bike. Although it is pretty easy to carry one of these bikes a short distance thanks to their shape, size and the presence of a carry handle on most models carrying one over long distances can become tiresome. This is where the value of a fold up bike bag becomes apparent. With their padded handles and weight distributing straps they make carrying your bike over extended period a breeze. These bags come highly recommended by most fold up bike enthusiasts so they are well worth checking out. Other accessories include special tyres, lights and of course a safety helmet. DAHON FOLDING BIKES
The Dahon story is a fascinating one- starting in 1975 when the founder of Dahon, Dr David Hon, was working as a high level physicist in an aircraft corporation in California. To cut a long story short Dr Hon started to feel dissatisfaction with his work as he wanted to be doing something more in line with improvement of the world rather than working on war instruments and it was while he was in this period of dissatisfaction that the oil and gas crisis hit; whilst queueing yet again for gasoline Dr Hon saw it was time to come up with a way of reducing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels. He was struck by the relevance of bicycles which he had used a lot in his younger days – he could see that it was important to improve the technology of the bikes that were around to make them more suitable and relevant to today’s needs. It was while thinking along these lines that Dr Hon came up with the idea of a portable folding bicycle. During the next seven years in his spare time at evenings and weekends he built many many prototypes in his aim to perfect a folding bike that would fold quickly and compactly and be reliable to use. In 1982 the folding bicycle was ready, it was extremley successful and won several awards; however no company was interested in taking on its production or licence not surprisingly really as the idea was very forward thinking at that time. By 1983 Dr Hon had gathered the funds to locate to Tawain and began manufacturing the folding bike in his own factory in line with his commitment to environmentally sustainable transport. His company Dahon is now extremely successful and influences how many many people transport themselves on a daily basis; the vision is still the inspiration of the company and is making a huge difference in the way it was always intended.
