To keep yourself legal when cycling on your folding bike, you must have a white light at the front and a rear red light, red rear reflector and on each pedal at the front and back amber/yellow reflectors. You can buy lights that flash and steady ones – so you might consider having one of each type – steady at front and flashing at the rear. A steady white front light is essential when cycling in unlit areas. Reflectors at the front and back and on the wheel spokes are also a good idea. The Highway Code states that steady lights must meet standard BS 6162-3 and flashing lights must flash at a rate of one to four equal flashes per second and be at least four candelas in brightness. Your reflectors for the pedals and rear must comply with BS 6102-2. Any lights used in addition to the compulsory ones must be white at the front of the bike and red at the back and they must not be dazzling for other road users.
